Using videotaped segments for illustration, our Faculty will share a novel approach in addressing mental illness in the family. This 2-day workshop will cover four major themes in working with individuals with mental illness, including how to address individual symptoms in the family context and how to use our specially designed Family Biofeedback Assessment protocol© to depict individual physiological responses in relation to family relationships. The presentation will also cover a range of affective and anxiety disorders as well as psychosomatic disorders. Through this training, we hope to recruit a group of professionals who are interested in adopting this way of working with mental illness.

The purpose of this training is to recruit professionals from multi-disciplinary backgrounds who are interested in becoming affiliated with AAFT to develop a new approach in working with mental illnesses. Participants must enroll in both days in order to receive a Certificate of Attendance and to be invited to join the intermediate and advanced training.

 4. Looking beyond the “problem” child: Assessing children’s symptoms using the systemic perspective

Dates: September 7, 2022 (Wednesday)

Time: 7pm – 9pm

Venue: Asian Academy of Family Therapy, No. 4 Pottinger Street, Central

Fee: Free-of-charge

Language : Cantonese (supplemented with English)

(Alternative arrangements may be made for the workshop depending on the COVID-19 situation and infection control measures that are enforced.)

Children and adolescents often present with physical symptoms such as recurrent abdominal pain, vomiting, or chronic headaches without any identifiable underlying organic causes. Others present with behavioral problems including hyperactivity, temper tantrums, and poor conduct that parents often find difficult to manage, even with input from different professionals.

At this workshop, Dr. Tsang will explore how one can assess children’s symptoms using a systemic perspective. Instead of focusing on the “problem” child, she believes one should look beyond the symptoms and explore on how the symptoms and relationship are closely intertwined. Video clips of family sessions will be shown to highlight how a new understanding of the problems may bring about new possibilities in symptom management.
